Harness the power of science in your training and you’ll be able to change behavior faster than ever before. From dogs who are fearful or aggressive on walks, to difficult pets at the veterinary hospital, to training of dogs for service, a sound science-based approach leads to the fastest, most effective training. In this 3-day seminar, you’ll hear from a complement of acclaimed lecturers on topics they are passionate about.

The Power of Science: Dealing with Fear, Aggression & Other Behavioral or Training issues in Dogs and Cats, at Home, in the Field, or in the Hospital or Shelter Setting

On Day 1 and Day 2 (3 PE points per day), Dr. Sophia Yin will guide you through the principles of learning needed to handle 90% of behavioral issues like a professional. Then, in subsequent lectures which build upon each other, she’ll reveal the subtle body language signs that point to fear and imminent aggression, illustrate the methods to reverse these issues efficiently and show why it’s best to avoid punishment. She will also present in detail her version of the Learn to Earn Program for teaching impeccable focus and developing impulse control. She will cover using an integrative approach to dealing with fear and aggression and the importance of taking measures when developing training protocols. Lastly, Dr. Yin will lecture on Low Stress Handling of dogs and cats, her innovative handling methods are changing the face of how veterinary medicine is practiced in the U.S.

On Day 3 (2 PE points), Sabrina Brando, Simon Prins and Valerie Jonckheer-Sheehy round out the perspective by focusing on the application of a zoo approach to the enrichment and training of pets, operational dogs and the importance of data collection and analysis and lastly, case reports on pathological behavior in a series of young Dutch dogs. This dynamic line-up of speakers and lectures are a once in a lifetime opportunity that you do not want to miss!

Simon Prins - Specialist Expertise at KLPD (National Crime Squad) - “When I started as a trainer in a new innovative special police project (1996), I discovered the power of operant conditioning (OC). With the focus on positive reinforcement, creating a safe learning environments and setting up data systems it was possible to set and reach new goals. Clear communication and defined criteria to achieve a high rate of reinforcement will change behavior into wanted behavior. This in not only working for animals but definitely for humans too! Training and developing special trained animals into high risk operations lead to a whole new concept of animal training. Development of protocol training and training materials / equipment made it possible to train and deploy animals beyond the known limits. Although similar goals may be obtained by using positive reinforcement techniques as well as through the use the traditional methods of punishing or negative reinforcement, there is still much confusion of the different terminology and their mechanisms, as well as the related behaviors and underlying affective states. In this presentation I will highlight the advantages of the use of positive reinforcement and hope to persuade all to focus on this method when training animals to collaborate with us.” Simon will also give a presentation on the importance of data collection and record keeping, and how this can increase the success of animal training programs.
