Part 1: Theory and practical aspects of environmental enrichment programs

Environmental enrichment programs are fundamental in the care of laboratory animals. The emphasis is on programs, as not one program would cover the different aspects on animal’s life nor would it reflect the dynamic nature of these programs. This webinar will start with an overview of what a modern and professional environmental enrichment program entails. Then it will briefly cover how to design a program with regard to the species and to fit the program to a laboratory setting. Observation, record keeping, evaluation and staff communication are key to ensuring the success of an environmental enrichment program and the last part of the webinar will be dedicated to covering these aspects. This webinar will give an introduction to the science of environmental enrichment and the practical aspects of how to set the program up. The power point, videos, photos and reference and book list will give participants a starting point to either set up a new program, or take an existing program to a new level.

- Overview of a professional environmental enrichment program
- How to design an enrichment program
- Designing for a species
- Observation and evaluation of an enrichment program
- Record keeping and staff communication to be successful
