Press Release

Since August 2020 Animals Asia and AnimalConcepts are collaborating with the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens to support them in their efforts to improve and maintain good animal welfare for animals in member parks.

The Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens (CAZG) is dedicated to continuous personal development through educational opportunities of zoo employees to improve the wellbeing of the animals and a wide variety of events have been held since 2012.

This new online educational effort is also made possible through collaborations with other experts in the zoo community through recorded webinars with translated slides and subtitles. These are accessible for viewing on a dedicated ‘YouTube’ style channel as well as additional translated resources on a platform for viewing and download. A similar platform to the Practical Animal Welfare Science platform in dual languages also has a legacy section of all activities Animals Asia and the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens have done together over more than a decade of work.

“The online training has been a huge success, AnimalConcepts have provided first-class speakers thoroughly knowledgable in their subject area and have delivered presentations that offer both theoretical advice and excellent practical experience. This has led to keepers in the CAZG member zoos implementing a number of new initiatives to benefit the animals in their care” says David Neale, Animal Welfare Director at Animals Asia Foundation.

The first webinar was covering an overview of the care and welfare of big cats and was delivered by Dr Sarah Chapman and Julian Chapman from Chapman Zoo Consultancy. The second webinar was covering an overview of the care and welfare of elephants and was delivered by Gerry Creighton from Global Elephant Care. Together the webinars have over 1600 views and participants are starting to share their photos and videos of the changes they have made with the information learned, and questions sent to the instructors.

"Educational efforts, science-based as well as practical ideas and activities to implement around animal care and welfare are key to increasing opportunities for animals and promoting positive animal wellbeing, and we applaud CAZG for their active engagement and requests for more knowledge," says the director of AnimalConcepts Sabrina Brando.

More webinars are being prepared and translated in collaboration with other specialists and the platforms will continue to evolve with new and updated content.
