Meet Sabrina Brando
& the extended team
Sabrina BrandoÂ
CEO & PhD Researcher
Sabrina Brando is the director of AnimalConcepts, including INTERBEING, an interconnected online platform uniting people and organisations on 6 continents, combining animal, people, and planetary wellbeing. She has an MSc in Animal Studies and is in her final year of a PhD at the University of Stirling in Scotland on human wellbeing and human-animal interconnectedness, focusing on human wellbeing at an individual, team, leadership, and organisational level. Sabrina is a graduate of the Inner MBA class of 2022.
AnimalConcepts is proud to be an Earth Charter International Partner since 2020. We use the Earth Charter as an ethical lens and compass, combined with the Sustainable Development Goals, to review and decide how we want to act as an organisation and as individuals connecting together.
Sabrina teaches at various universities and colleges and works with many zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and other facilities worldwide on animal wellbeing, behaviour, environmental enrichment, animal training, habitat design, and the human-animal relationship. She also focuses on human and planetary wellbeing, highlighting the interconnectedness of all: animals, people, and the planet. Sabrina is a frequent invited and keynote speaker at conferences and seminars and has organised over 500 events through AnimalConcepts worldwide since 2004. She serves on zoo expert groups, is an advisor to the AZA Animal Welfare Committee, the ZAA Animal Welfare SAG, and collaborates on various research projects on animal care, wellbeing, behaviour, and advocacy.
Sabrina is a reviewer in academic journals, contributes chapters to animal wellbeing books, and has extensively published popular and academic articles. She also works with governments, writing policies and guidelines. She is the author of a book on âOptimal Welfare of Ageing Wild Animals in Human Careâ by Springer Nature (Brando & Chapman, 2023), working on a forthcoming book 'Caring Together' on human wellbeing in animal care professionals and wildlife conservationists by Taylor & Francis, and together with the whole AnimalConcepts team working on an upcoming book by Routledge on Animal Behaviour Training and Ethics for Animal Wellbeing Education Research and Conservation.
Sabrina is a psychologist, a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional and an Optimize Eudaimonia Coach. In January 2021, the One Care platform was launched as part of the INTERBEING platform. The 'One Care' approach is based on optimal human and animal wellbeing. She feels a holistic approach is key, coming from a place of care for all: people, animals, the greater community of life, and this beautiful planet with share. Compassionate and holistic self-care (individuals) and we-care (team, leadership and organisational) approaches combined will support the commitment and desire to serve animals, people, and the environment. When we take care to give care, people, other animals, and the planet can flourish. Her studies during the Inner MBA focussed on creating a culture of care âWe-careâ in the workplace. The signature workshop âWild about Self-careâ is an interactive online workshop designed to give you practical tools to recharge, build resilience, and reconnect with your purpose.
In 2018, Sabrina became a Chief Storyteller. She loves storytelling and writing - particularly about animals, the human-animal connection, and the natural world. She often wears a button with âI love storiesâ on it. This button sparks many great conversations and storytelling about animals, among many other topics, from people she meets at conferences to strangers on a plane. If you have a story you want to share about the animal(s) you care(d) for, a special friendship you have with your favourite animal, a great action for animals, peoples, or the planet you were involved in, or anything else that makes your heart sing, Sabrina would love to hear from you!
