🐾 Why We Struggle with Self-Care

Ā

Many of us in animal wellbeing and conservation:

  • Put animals and colleagues before ourselves
  • Work long hours with little time to recharge
  • Carry emotional weight from tough decisions or loss
  • Tell ourselves ā€œI’ll rest laterā€ā€¦ but later rarely comesĀ Ā Ā

And yet, when we neglect our own wellbeing, it doesn’t just affect us — it affects the animals, the people we work with, the mission we care so deeply about, but our whole life.

Imagine giving so much to your work and the animals you care for… and finding yourself exhausted, stretched thin, or disconnected from what first inspired you. It happens to so many of us.

Self-care and dedication are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are deeply interconnected: when we take better care of ourselves, we’re better able to care for the animals, the mission, and the wild places we love.

We underestimate how much small, consistent self-care practices can recharge us.

Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential. By building sustainable habits and creating your personal self-care bundle, you’ll have tools you can turn to in moments of stress, transition, or fatigue.

Taking care of yourself means you can keep showing up — not just for your work, but for your whole life.

That’s why Wild about Self-careĀ was created - a space to pause, restore, and rediscover the practices that sustain both you and the vital work you do.

šŸ’š Why Self-Care Matters

Working in animal wellbeing and conservation is more than a job — it’s a calling. You give your time, your energy, and your heart to animals, wild places, and communities.

And yet, imagine giving so much of yourself… only to find you’re exhausted, stretched thin, or disconnected from what first inspired you. It happens to so many of us.

The truth is, self-care and dedication to your work are not mutually exclusive. They are deeply interconnected: when you nurture your own wellbeing, you have the strength, resilience, and clarity to continue making a difference — sustainably and wholeheartedly.

🌿 Introduction Wild about Self-care

Ā

In this workshop, you’ll learn simple, sustainable practices that fit into real life — so you can care for yourself with the same dedication you give to others.Ā

Take care of yourself, so you can keep caring for animals, saving species, and protecting wild places.

Wild About Self-Care is an interactive online workshop designed to give you practical tools to recharge, build resilience, and reconnect with your purpose.

Self-care isn’t about adding more to your already full plate. It’s about simple, sustainable practices that restore your energy and reconnect you to your purpose. It’s aboutĀ deciding what will be on your plate, so you can keep showing up, not just for your work, but for your whole life.

That’s whyĀ Wild about Self-careĀ was created: to give you tools, practices, and a supportive space to put yourself back on your care list.

About your facilitator

Hi, Iā€˜m Sabrina, a psychologist who loves the outdoors, laughter, journeys, and connecting with others, including other animals! How are you (but then really) & can you please tell me a story, are two of my favourite questions. Stories of call kinds can inspire, bring us joy, connection, and help us heal. Stories and ACTs can affect change. One of my favourite quotes is along the lines of ā€˜What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say’ by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It connects deeply to my ideas around flourishing for all. For peoples, other animals, the greater community of life, and this beautiful planet we share. To listen, learn, share, and act from a culture of respect and care. I look forward to connecting with you.

I am currently a PhDĀ researcher in the Psychology Department at the University of Stirling in Scotland,Ā  focusses on individual, team, leadership, and organisational aspects of human wellbeing in zoos and aquariums. My book Wild about Self-care is coming out in 2026, so stay tuned!

We all need support, training, a sense of belonging, and care. At INTERBEING AnimalConcepts we talk aboutĀ Take Care to Give Care. When we careĀ of ourselves, we can better care for each other. When we take care to give care, everyone benefits. I have a lot of training and practices to share with you and hope to see you online!

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? - Mary Oliver

"The course 'Take Care to Give Care' is so needed and relevant in our industry. Sabrina manages to communicate about difficult topics that most of us have experienced with such grace and great care. I would recommend her course as an absolute must for everyone working with animals and humans."Ā Ā

"Sabrina Brando's talk was just what I needed when I needed it. I think we underestimate how important self care is if we want to keep doing our work properly and with balance. I recommend her course for anyone who is involved with animal and/or human care and wants to have a long and fulfilling career doing so."Ā

"One of Sabrina's best qualities as a speaker/teacher, is the way she helps you understand. It's in such a humane way, she really cares about everyone and you can feel it. The atmosphere is relaxed and uplifiting. You'll find both small and bigger changes in thinking and problem solving, that helps you either as a pro and/or as a pet owner. Well, in general. I just loved Sabrina's lectures! She made a huge impact on my thinking..." ~Ā Sissa

Why are there two price options?

We know that many people working in animal wellbeing and conservation do so out of passion, not for high salaries. At the same time, offering high-quality, interactive training takes resources to create and sustain.

That’s why we offer two price points:

€97 – Supported Rate: This helps keep the workshop accessible for those with limited financial means.

€127 – Contribution Rate: If you are able, this option not only covers your seat but also supports our Acts of Kindness program, which pays forward training opportunities for others in the community who may not otherwise be able to join, including this event.

For example, for every 3 people joining and contributing, we can donate a space, or partly support those who apply to the program. We actively let people know on this page how many spaces have been donated. If you can, please help others.Ā

This way, we take care of one another — ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent people from accessing self-care, while also sustaining the work needed to offer these programs.

"During her presentations, Sabrina Brando does not just give us the definition of the word ā€œcompassionā€. She shows us through concrete examples and fascinating research how to improve our wellbeing, that of our learners, our colleagues, our interlocutors. A seminar of public utility for any professional working with animals, human or non-human." ~Ā Lisa
