Why we struggle with supporting animals being agents of their life

Ā

Some of the challenges can be:

  • Underestimating animal agency: Animals may be treated as passive recipients rather than active participants in their care.

  • Perceived ā€œluxuryā€ vs necessity: Enrichment may be viewed as optional rather than essential for wellbeing.

  • Fear of change: Staff may worry about making mistakes when introducing new enrichment or habitat modifications.
  • Established routines may resist change; staff may be used to doing things ā€œthe way we’ve always done them.ā€

Ā

Luckily there are all kinds of solutions, opportunities, and pathways forward to improve animal wellbeing!

The 24/7 approach provides a holistic framework for mapping aspects of animal life. It reviews the species’ natural history, sensory systems, social life, and other relevant elements across day and night, weekdays, weekends, and seasons. This concept considers an individual's needs and preferences, which are influenced by various factors across an animal's lifespan.

Understanding their sensory and cognitive world (Umwelt) to interpret their behaviour and mental states helps promote positive wellbeing. When we put science into practice, bring an autocritical perspective, and focus on possibilities, we can find solutions to improve front and back-of-house areas, environmental enrichment programs, nutrition, human-animal interactions and other areas affecting an animal's life.

Our ability to provide quality care through holistic care programs, habitat management and assessments allows us to support animals to being agents of their lives.

Habitat management

Ā

The 24/7 approach provides a holistic framework for understanding and supporting every aspect of an animal’s life - day and night, weekdays and weekends, across seasons.

By exploring each individual’s needs and their sensory and cognitive world (Umwelt), we can interpret behaviour and mental states, and actively promote positive wellbeing.

This workshop blends science with practice, encourages an auto-critical mindset, and focuses on actionable solutions, from habitat management and enrichment programs to nutrition and human–animal.

In particularĀ this workshop will focus how we can and should manage environments - all habitats, to reduce dependency on us, andĀ increase opportunities and affordances soĀ that animals can organise their own lives as much as possible.Ā

About your facilitator

Hi, Iā€˜m Sabrina, a psychologist specialised in the human-animal interaction and relationship,Ā  who loves the outdoors, laughter, journeys, and connecting with others, including other animals! How are you (but then really) & can you please tell me a story, are two of my favourite questions. Stories of call kinds can inspire, bring us joy, connection, and help us heal. Stories and ACTs can affect change. One of my favourite quotes is along the lines of ā€˜What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say’ by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It connects deeply to my ideas around flourishing for all. For peoples, other animals, the greater community of life, and this beautiful planet we share. To listen, learn, share, and act from a culture of respect and care. I look forward to connecting with you.

The course 'Take Care to Give Care' is so needed and relevant in our industry. Sabrina manages to communicate about difficult topics that most of us have experienced with such grace and great care. I would recommend her course as an absolute must for everyone working with animals and humans.Ā

Sabrina Brando's talk was just what I needed when I needed it. I think we underestimate how important self care is if we want to keep doing our work properly and with balance. I recommend her course for anyone who is involved with animal and/or human care and wants to have a long and fulfilling career doing so.

Transform Your Animal Care Practice €147
Why are there two price options?

We know that many people working in animal wellbeing and conservation do so out of passion, not for high salaries. At the same time, offering high-quality, interactive training takes resources to create and sustain.

That’s why we offer two price points:

€97 – Supported Rate: This helps keep the workshop accessible for those with limited financial means.

€127 – Contribution Rate: If you are able, this option not only covers your seat but also supports our Acts of Kindness program, which pays forward training opportunities for others in the community who may not otherwise be able to join, including this event.

For example, for every 3 people joining and contributing, we can donate a space, or partly support those who apply to the program. We actively let people know on this page how many spaces have been donated. If you can, please help others.Ā

This way, we take care of one another, ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent people from accessing self-care, while also sustaining the work needed to offer these programs.

Need more support? Just reach out to Sabrina for other available options via the contact form below.

She shows us through concrete examples and fascinating research how to improve our wellbeing, that of our learners, our colleagues, our interlocutors. A seminar of public utility for any professional working with animals, human or non-human." ~Ā Lisa
